You have probably heard the benefits positive thinking has on us. It helps you cope with stress and tough situations and overall improve your mental health and strengthen your immune system. But this doesn’t happen overnight, it’s an everyday effort to be a positive thinker and turn a bad situation into a good one, especially if you’re more prone to negative thinking. So what can you do to become a more positive thinker? Well, I’m going to show you some methods which you can include in your everyday life.
First - Avoid negative self-talk - it involves the things you mentally tell yourself, how you perform and interact with the world around you. And if it centers on negative thoughts, your self-esteem will suffer. So what can you do to avoid them? One thing is to start noticing when you have these thoughts and actively work to change them. If you notice you’re starting to engage in negative self-talk, start looking for ways to change your thought patterns and adjust your interpretations of your won behavior.
Second - Humor - when you have struggles it is important that you stay open to laugher and fun. Sometimes just by recognizing the humor in a situation can lift you up and brighten your outlook. Seeking sources of humor like watching a comedy or reading jokes can help you think more positively.
Third - Include it in your everyday life - think of it as a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Researchers believe that the way you explain events is linked to whether you are an optimist or a pessimist. By taking a moment to analyze the event and making sure you’re giving yourself the credit you deserve, and not blaming yourself for things outside of your control, you’ll start to become more optimistic.
Fourth - Keep practicing - as I said, it doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly does not have a switch. Like any goal the most important thing is to stick with it for the long-term. Even if it means to include a positive thought once or twice a day, it still is better and makes an improvement than to dwell on negative thoughts all the time. And don’t be afraid to seek the help of a family member or friend who you can count on for positive encouragement. Do things you enjoy and surround yourself with positive people.
