The importance of listening to music

We all listen to music, it’s probably one of the things we can’t live without. For some it’s a way to run from their everyday life, for others it boosts their creativity level, and some use it as medicine. Music is an art, it produces beauty of forms, harmony and expression of emotion, it is a world within itself, and with a language we all understand. Today I’m going to show you some of the benefits that music has on us.

1. Music makes you happier - research has shown that when you listen to music you like, your brain releases dopamine - a “feel-good” neurotransmitter. So next time you’re feeling down and need an emotional boost, just listen to your favorite songs for around 15 minutes.

2. It lowers stress and improves health - feeling stressed? Well, listening to music you enjoy decreases the levels of cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress. Since stress causes 60% of all our illnesses and disease. A study has shown that people who actively participate in making music by playing an instrument or singing have a stronger immune system.

3. It reduces depression - a lot of people have experienced depression, its a place where you feel lonely, scared, even suicidal at times. In fact more than 350 million people around the world suffer from it and every single one of them has it’s own ways of dealing with it. One thing you can do to help you is listen to music, and specifically classical music. It’s demonstrated that it can benefit patients by lifting them up.

4. Music strengthens learning and memory - having a hard time remembering what you studied for the test or you just couldn’t learn anything in the first place? Well music can help you learn and recall information better, but it depends on how much you like the music.

5. Increase workout endurance - studies show the listening to your favorite workout tracks can raise physical performance and workout endurance. When we’re focused on our favorite album or song, we’re not noticing that we ran an extra mile or increased our reps.

6. Helps you sleep better - many people have insomnia or trouble with their sleep and don’t feel energetic in the morning. A research has shown that people who listened to calm music for 45 minutes before going to sleep showed significantly better sleep results than those who listened to an audiobook or did nothing different from their usual routine.
