In spite of being a small country, Bulgaria has many landmarks, beautiful sceneries and great cities. Here are some of the lovely places that you can add to your bucket list if you get the chance to travel to this country:
1. Sofia
Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and also the country’s biggest city. It is surrounded by mountains, which form beautiful sceneries in whichever direction you look. There are many things to see there, such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the National Art Gallery, the Boyana Church, the National Palace of Culture and so much more - museums, galleries, parks and historic monuments.
2. The Amphitheatre in Plovdiv.
This Roman theatre is one of the world’s best-preserved ancient theaters. It was constructed in the 90s of the 1st century AD. The theater can host between 5000 and 7000 spectators and it is currently in use. During the summer months, there are held many theatrical plays and music shows.
3. Tsarevets Fortress
Tsatevets is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo, northern Bulgaria. Don’t miss The Sound and Light audiovisual attraction which is carried sometimes in the evenings (especially in the tourist season).
4. Rila Monastery
Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is founded in the 10th century and named after its founder – the hermit Ivan of Rila. The monastery has a great architecture and history.
5. Koprivshtitsa
Koprivshtitsa is a historic town in the Koprivshtitsa Municipality in Sofia Province, central Bulgaria. It is known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and for its folk music festivals. Being one of the most characteristic Bulgarian towns, it still preserves the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 19th century.
6. Nessebar
Nessebar is an ancient city and one of the major seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It is often referred to as the “Pearl of the Black Sea”. Nessebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. Due to the city’s abundance of historic buildings, it is included by UNESCO in its list of World Heritage Sites.
7. Sozopol
Sozopol is also an ancient seaside town, where you can see a reconstructed gate, part of Sozopol’s ancient fortifications. A famous attraction is the Apollonia art and film festival, which takes place there every year in September. There are beautiful sandy beaches in Sozopol and the atmosphere is amazing.
8. Seven Rila Lakes
The Seven Rila lakes are a group of glacial lakes in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are really beautiful and great tourist attraction because of their natural environment. The best time to visit the lakes is summer. The temperatures then are higher and the risk of sudden storms is lower.
9. Devetashka cave
The Devetashka cave is a really huge and beautiful natural creation, which is home to around 30,000 bats. An interesting fact is that there were set some scenes from the movie "The Expendables 2".
10. Krushuna Falls
Krushuna Falls are a series of waterfalls in Northern Bulgaria. They are famous with their picturesque landscape. There is a tourist path leading to the cave where the river springs. The waterfalls are located close to the Devetashka cave.
